私の母は62歳のとき、ハワイ大学で第二の学位を取得しようと決心したのだが、そのことに同年齢の女性が異論を唱えたことがあった。その女性は母に対して、こう言った。

　「ルース、ばかげてるわ。学位を取るまで3年かかるんでしょう。3年たったら、あなたは65歳じゃないの」

　母はその女性のいったことをしばらく考えていたが、笑顔でこう答えた。

　「3年たてば、何もしなくても65歳になるわ」
