スワヒリの挨拶ジャンボがお茶目に聞こえる訳は、きっと英語のjumboと重なるから。広大な大陸の大らかな挨拶にふさわしく思える。jumboの語源を辿ると19世紀中ごろにイギリス、フランスで人気を博したアフリカゾウの名前だった。その名前はスワヒリ語の挨拶からとられているという落ち。
